During the spring of 2011, I had the opportunity to intern at European Equestrian Concepts. I shadowed a Psychologist and Equine specialist, during equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions, for three months. The internship was continually rewarding through knowledge I obtained, the interaction I had with the patients, and for the networking opportunities I established.

Beginning an internship across the country was an exciting experience. Prior to moving out I researched the psychologist and learned of passion for helping women and young adults. My goal was to learn about running an equine therapy operation. Weekly we would meet on Tuesday mornings to discuss new cases and plans for current patients.  I spent time at home reading previous case studies and asked relevant questions at the center. Finally, once I knew the ropes I trained incoming volunteers and held safety and informational seminars. I also wanted to know the agreement between the center and the volunteers the manager helped me achieve this objective by having me revise a liability contract that everyone must sign.

As I learned more about the care of the horses I wanted to learn how they chose and trained them. The equine specialist helped me achieve this objective by taking me along to look at a perspective horse. She informed me of what they were looking for and when we took him back to the center, on a trial basis, she had me test him. Another goal for me was to acquire how to appropriately interrelate with patients and their families by founding a proficient connection though continually transmitting sympathy, awareness, and sincerity while supporting them. In order to achieve this I paid close attention to the psychologist with her interactions. I took notes and asked questions at appropriate times. I feel more confident in my ability to interact with families and patients because I have consistently being genuine but now I avoid becoming too emotional by remembering that I can help them in the present.

Interacting with EEC’s staff, patients, and families has been an experience that will forever be in my heart. The knowledge I gained was more than I ever expected possible. Not only did I obtain knowledge of equine therapy I also was able to network with people who share the same passion I do.
